Washing Machine Won't Start? Causes & Fixes

When you press start and your washing machine does nothing - no lights, no hum, no fill - it feels like a major failure, but the cause is often something simple like lost power, a lid that isn't fully latched, or a control lock you didn't know was on. Below are the most common reasons a washer won't begin a cycle, the safe checks you can do yourself in a few minutes, and the point where it's time to call a technician.

Quick answer
  • Try a different outlet or reset the breaker - a dead washer is often just lost power, not a broken machine.
  • Make sure the lid is fully closed and latched; most washers won't start until they sense a locked lid or door.
  • Check for a child-lock or control-lock setting that quietly disables the buttons.
  • Confirm both hot and cold supply valves are open - many washers wait to fill before they will run.
  • If power, the door and the controls all check out and it stays dead, the lid switch, door lock or control board likely needs service.

Why it's worth fixing quickly

A washer that won't start usually isn't getting worse on its own, but ignoring it for long means a growing pile of laundry and, in some cases, water already sitting in the tub starting to smell. More importantly, some no-start faults trace back to a failing lid switch or door lock, which is a safety device that keeps the drum from spinning while the lid is open. Pinning down the real cause early tells you whether you're looking at a thirty-second fix or a part that needs replacing before the machine is safe to use again.

1No power at the outlet

Start here. Confirm the cord is fully seated in the wall, then plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet to see if the outlet itself is live. Washers are sometimes on a GFCI outlet, so press the reset button on the outlet if it has one. Do not use an extension cord with a washer.

2Tripped breaker

If the outlet is dead, check the breaker panel. A tripped breaker often sits in a middle position, so flip it fully off and then back on. If it trips again right away, stop and call a pro - a breaker that won't stay on points to an electrical fault, not a nuisance trip.

3Lid or door not fully closed

Most washers won't start until they sense the lid (top-loaders) or door (front-loaders) is securely shut. Press the lid down firmly until it clicks, or make sure nothing like a stray sock is blocking a front-load door from sealing. A worn latch that won't catch is a common culprit.

4Control lock or child lock is on

Many machines have a child-lock or control-lock feature that disables the buttons, often shown by a small padlock icon on the display. It's easy to switch on by accident. Check your control panel and the owner's manual - usually you hold one specific button for three seconds to clear it.

5Water supply valves closed

A washer that has power and a closed lid may still seem dead if it's waiting to fill and no water arrives. Check that both the hot and cold supply valves behind the machine are turned fully open, and that the inlet hoses aren't kinked. Some models pause silently until they sense water.

6Failed lid switch, door lock or control board

If power, the door and the controls all check out and the washer still won't respond, the lid switch (top-loaders), door-lock assembly (front-loaders) or the main control board may have failed. Confirming which one needs a multimeter and safe disassembly, so this is a job for a technician.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Close the lid gently but fully. Slamming the lid or door wears out the latch and switch over time. Let it close and click on its own so the machine keeps sensing it correctly for years.
  • Know how your control lock works. Read the one line in your manual that explains the child-lock or control-lock button. Knowing the shortcut saves a service call the next time the buttons seem dead.
  • Leave the supply valves open and hoses clear. Keep the hot and cold valves open and the inlet hoses free of kinks so the washer always fills on demand and never stalls waiting for water.

When to call a professional

If you've confirmed the outlet is live, reset the breaker, fully latched the lid, cleared any control lock and opened the water valves but the washer still won't start, the fault is most likely the lid switch, door-lock assembly or the main control board - all of which need a multimeter and safe disassembly to diagnose. You should also call a pro right away if the breaker trips again the moment you reset it, or if you smell burning or see scorch marks near the cord or panel, since those point to an electrical fault that isn't safe to keep testing. Our technicians carry common washer parts, so most no-start repairs are finished in a single visit. We serve Tacoma and South King County, usually with same-week appointments.

FAQ

Washing Machine repair - frequently asked questions

Most often it's lost power, a lid or door that isn't fully latched, or a control lock that's switched on. Check the outlet and breaker first, press the lid until it clicks, and look for a small padlock icon on the display. If all of that checks out and it stays dead, the lid switch, door lock or control board likely needs service.

A fully dead washer with no lights almost always means it isn't getting power. Make sure the cord is seated, plug something else into the same outlet to test it, press the reset on any GFCI outlet, and check the breaker. If the outlet is live and the breaker is on but the washer is still dark, the inlet power or control board may have failed and needs a technician.

It usually comes down to the part and the age of the machine. A lid switch or door lock is an inexpensive, worthwhile fix, while a main control board sits higher. As a rule of thumb, repair makes sense when it costs less than about half the price of a comparable new washer, and our tech gives you an honest repair-or-replace recommendation before you commit.

Most washer no-start repairs in the Tacoma area land between $150 and $450, depending on whether it's a lid switch, door lock or control board. You approve a flat-rate price before any work begins, and the $79 diagnostic is credited toward the repair when you go ahead, so the diagnosis effectively costs nothing once we do the work.
