Repair Guide
Opening the washer to find it full of water - or clothes dripping wet - usually means the drain or spin step didn't complete. Most causes are a blockage you can clear, but some point to the pump or a switch that needs a technician.
A washer that won't drain leaves a tub of standing water and a soaked load that quickly starts to smell - and if water backs up over the standpipe it can flood the floor. Most no-drain faults come from a blockage that keeps building, so running another cycle usually makes it worse rather than better. Clearing the cause promptly avoids water damage and a musty machine.
Pull the washer out and check the drain hose for kinks or bends, and the standpipe it empties into for a clog. This is the quickest thing to rule out.
Front-loaders have a drain-pump filter (usually behind a small door at the bottom front) that traps coins, hairpins and lint. Have a towel ready, open it, and clear any debris.
Washers won't spin or drain if they don't sense the lid/door is securely closed. A worn lid switch (top-loaders) or door lock (front-loaders) can stop the cycle - this usually needs replacing.
If the hose and filter are clear, the pump itself may be jammed by a small item or burned out. You may hear it humming without draining. Replacing a pump is best handled by a technician.
A bunched-up load can trip the machine's balance sensor and pause before draining. Redistribute the load evenly and restart the cycle.
If the hose, standpipe and pump filter are all clear but the washer still won't drain, the drain pump, lid switch or door lock likely needs replacing. Our technicians carry common washer parts, so most no-drain repairs are done in one visit.

FAQ
Most often a blockage (hose, standpipe or pump filter) or a failed lid switch/door lock that stops the machine sensing it's safe to spin. Clear the blockages first; if it still won't drain, book a repair.
On most front-loaders it's behind a small access door at the bottom front of the machine. Keep a towel and shallow tray handy - water will come out when you open it.
Yes - switch it off, and drain the hose into a low bucket, or open the pump filter to release the water before troubleshooting.
Washer repairs generally fall between $150 and $400 - a drain pump or lid switch is inexpensive, a motor or control board more. You see a flat rate before we begin, and the diagnostic is free with the repair.
