Why Is My Refrigerator Leaking Water?

A leaking refrigerator is more than a nuisance - standing water can warp floors and lead to mold within a day or two. The good news is that most fridge leaks trace back to a handful of causes you can narrow down quickly.

Quick answer
  • Water under the crisper drawers usually means a clogged defrost drain.
  • Water on the floor often points to the water line or the icemaker/dispenser.
  • A tilted fridge can stop the drain pan from working - check it's level.
  • Persistent leaks should be fixed quickly to avoid floor and mold damage.

Why it's worth fixing quickly

Standing water from a leaking fridge can warp flooring and grow mold within a day or two, and a puddle on a kitchen floor is an easy slip hazard. Because most leaks come from a slowly clogging drain or a loosening line, they only get worse with time - what starts as an occasional drip becomes a daily mop-up. Tracing the source early keeps a small fix from becoming floor damage.

1Clogged defrost drain

If you find water under the crisper drawers or ice on the freezer floor, the defrost drain is likely blocked by food debris or ice. Flushing it with warm water often clears it; a stubborn clog needs service.

2Cracked or loose water line

Fridges with an icemaker or water dispenser have a supply line that can crack or work loose at the connection. Water on the floor behind the fridge usually points here - shut off the supply and inspect.

3Icemaker or dispenser fault

A misaligned fill tube, stuck valve or overfilling icemaker can drip water into the freezer or down the door. This often needs a technician to pinpoint.

4Fridge isn't level

Refrigerators are designed to sit slightly tilted back so the drain pan works. If yours was moved or the floor is uneven, water can pool instead of draining - check it with a level.

5Cracked or overfull drain pan

The pan under the fridge catches defrost water to evaporate. A cracked pan, or one overwhelmed by another fault, leaks onto the floor and may need replacing.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Flush the defrost drain once a year. A yearly flush with warm water keeps the drain clear, heading off the single most common fridge leak before it starts.
  • Keep the fridge level. If it's been moved, check it with a level - the unit needs a slight backward tilt for the drain and pan to work properly.
  • Inspect the water line yearly. On models with an icemaker or dispenser, glance at the supply line and its connections for moisture, kinks or cracks.

When to call a professional

If you've checked that the fridge is level and the water line is intact but it keeps leaking, the defrost drain, icemaker valve or drain pan likely needs attention. Because standing water causes fast floor and mold damage, it's worth booking a prompt repair.

FAQ

Refrigerator repair - frequently asked questions

Almost always a clogged defrost drain. Melt-water can't drain away, so it backs up under the drawers. Flushing the drain often fixes it; a frozen clog needs service.

Yes - standing water and damp flooring can grow mold within a day or two, so it's best to find and fix the source quickly.

It will still keep food cold, but the water can damage your floor and create a slip hazard. Mop up and book a repair rather than leaving it.

Leak repairs are usually on the lower side - roughly $150-$350 - since most are a drain or hose fix rather than a major part. We confirm the flat rate up front, with the diagnostic credited to the job.
