How to Clean a Front-Load Washer to Stop Odor and Mold

If your front-load washer has started smelling musty or you've spotted dark specks on the rubber door seal, you're not alone - it's the most common complaint we hear about front-loaders, and it comes down to how they're built. The good news is that a simple monthly routine clears it up and keeps it away. Here's exactly how to clean the gasket, detergent drawer and drum, plus the daily habits that stop the smell from coming back.

Quick answer
  • Front-load washers trap water in the rubber door gasket, where mold and musty odor grow. Wiping the gasket dry is the most important habit.
  • Run a dedicated drum-clean cycle (or a hot cycle with washer cleaner) about once a month to clear the buildup you can't see.
  • Pull out and rinse the detergent drawer regularly; slimy residue there feeds the smell.
  • Leave the door and the detergent drawer open between washes so the inside can dry out.
  • Most odor is a cleaning and habit problem, not a repair - but a smell that returns within a day can point to a clogged drain or trapped water.

Why this maintenance matters

Front-load washers seal tightly and use very little water, which is great for your energy bill but leaves dampness, detergent film and lint trapped inside after every load. In our damp South King County climate that trapped moisture is the perfect home for mold and mildew, and once it takes hold in the rubber gasket the smell transfers straight onto your clean clothes. Letting it build up also lets grime work into places that are hard to reach, and a neglected drain or pump can eventually clog. A few minutes of upkeep each week protects your laundry, your washer and your indoor air.

1Clean and dry the rubber door gasket

Peel back the folds of the rubber door seal at the front of the drum - this is where water, lint and gunk collect. Wipe every fold with a cloth dampened in warm soapy water or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, then dry it thoroughly. If you see black mold spots, scrub gently with the vinegar solution and a soft brush. Check the bottom of the seal for socks, coins and trapped water, since standing water here is the number one source of odor.

2Remove and rinse the detergent drawer

Most front-loaders let you pull the dispenser drawer all the way out by pressing a release tab inside the cavity (check your manual). Take it to the sink and rinse off the slimy detergent and softener residue, using an old toothbrush to clear the softener and bleach channels. Wipe inside the empty cavity too, where mold often hides on the roof of the slot. Let the drawer air-dry before sliding it back in.

3Wipe the door glass and drum opening

Clean the inside of the glass door and the metal rim of the drum opening with your vinegar solution to remove the film of detergent and grime that builds up there. This area stays damp and is easy to overlook. A clean, dry rim helps the door seal sit properly and gives mold fewer footholds.

4Run the drum clean cycle

With the drum empty, run your washer's dedicated Tub Clean, Drum Clean or Clean Washer cycle if it has one. If it doesn't, run the hottest, longest cycle with no clothes. Add a washer-cleaning tablet (such as an Affresh-type product) or about a half cup of baking soda in the drum, and you can pour two cups of plain white vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Do not mix bleach and vinegar in the same cycle. Run this about once a month.

5Check the drain pump filter and drain it

Many front-loaders have a small access panel at the lower front hiding the drain pump filter (sometimes called the coin trap). Place a shallow pan and towels underneath, slowly unscrew the cap to drain the water, and clear out lint, hair, coins and the gunk caught there. A clogged filter holds dirty water and creates a strong smell. If you can't find the filter or it won't drain, leave it and ask a technician - some models route this differently.

6Leave the door and drawer open to dry

After every wash, leave the door open a few inches and pull the detergent drawer open a crack so air can circulate and the inside can dry completely. This single habit does more to prevent odor than anything else, because mold cannot grow in a dry drum. If you have small children or pets, just be mindful of the open door.

Keep it working between deep cleans

  • Use the right amount of HE detergent. Front-loaders need high-efficiency (HE) detergent, and far less of it than people think. Too much soap leaves a sticky film that feeds mold and never fully rinses away. If your clothes feel stiff or the drum smells soapy, you are likely using too much - cut the dose and the residue clears up.
  • Skip or cut back on liquid fabric softener. Liquid softener is one of the biggest causes of gasket slime and dispenser buildup. Try using less, switching to dryer balls, or adding a splash of white vinegar to the rinse instead. Your towels will stay more absorbent too.
  • Dry the gasket and leave the door open daily. Wipe the bottom of the door seal dry after the last load of the day, and keep the door and drawer cracked open between washes. These two small habits, done consistently, keep the inside dry enough that mold simply cannot get started between monthly deep cleans.

When to call a professional

If you've cleaned the gasket, drawer, drum and drain filter and the musty smell comes right back, or you see standing water in the drum or gasket that won't drain, something mechanical is usually going on - a partial clog in the drain hose or pump, a failing pump, or a drain line problem under the house. A sewer-gas or rotten-egg smell (rather than a musty one) points to a drain or plumbing issue rather than the washer itself. If mold has worked deep into the gasket and won't scrub clean, the rubber seal can be replaced. Our Tacoma and South King County technicians can pinpoint the cause and replace the pump, hoses or gasket so the odor stays gone for good.

FAQ

Washing Machine repair - frequently asked questions

Wipe the door gasket dry and leave the door open daily, rinse the detergent drawer every week or two, and run the drum clean cycle about once a month. In our damp climate, sticking to the monthly clean cycle is what keeps the smell from coming back.

If the musty smell returns within a day of cleaning, the cause is usually trapped water from a clogged drain pump filter or drain hose, or too much detergent and softener leaving residue. Clear the pump filter first; if a sewer or rotten-egg smell persists, that points to a drain or plumbing issue worth having checked.

You can use a diluted bleach solution on the gasket and a bleach run in the drum clean cycle, but never mix bleach with vinegar - the combination releases a dangerous gas. Many people find white vinegar and baking soda do the job with less harshness on the rubber seal.

If cleaning doesn't solve it and a part is to blame, washer repairs generally fall between $150 and $450 - a drain hose or pump clog is on the lower end, a new gasket or pump higher. You see a flat-rate price before we begin, and the $79 diagnostic is credited toward the repair, so you're never paying twice. See our cost guide for more detail.
