Repair Guide
When a dryer lights up, responds to the start button, and maybe even gets warm but the drum just sits there, the trouble is almost always in the parts that physically turn the drum, not the electronics. A single rubber drive belt wraps around the drum and is pulled tight by a spring-loaded idler pulley, while the drum rides on small support rollers. If the belt snaps or stretches, the idler seizes, a roller locks up, or the motor gives out, the drum stops tumbling even though everything else seems fine. The good news for Tacoma-area homeowners is that these are mechanical, repairable problems, and a few safe checks can tell you a lot before a technician arrives.
A dryer that won't tumble is not just inconvenient - it can be a fire and safety concern. A slipping belt or a seized pulley generates friction and heat, which is where that burning-rubber smell comes from, and continuing to run it risks damaging the motor or scorching nearby parts. If the dryer still heats while the drum sits still, clothes can overheat in one spot. Putting off the repair also tends to make it bigger: a worn belt that is left to fray can take out the idler and rollers with it. Catching it early usually means a smaller, cheaper fix.
The thin rubber belt that wraps the drum is the part that fails most often. When it snaps, the motor still runs and you hear it, but the drum does nothing and turns with almost no resistance by hand. Safe check: unplug the dryer, then reach in and spin the drum. If it spins very freely with no tension at all, a broken belt is the likely culprit. A stretched belt may still turn the drum slowly or slip with a burning-rubber smell under a load. Belt replacement is a standard repair best done by a technician since it requires opening the cabinet.
The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt. When its bearing dries out or seizes, the belt drags across a stuck wheel, which causes squealing, a burning-rubber odor, and sometimes a belt that breaks soon after. Safe check: with the dryer unplugged, slowly turn the drum by hand and listen for a high-pitched squeal or feel for heavy drag. A seized idler is typically replaced together with the belt, so it is worth having a pro inspect both at once.
The drum rides on two or more small rollers. When a roller bearing wears out or locks up, you may hear a rhythmic thumping or grinding, feel a tight or rough spot as the drum turns, and again smell hot rubber as the belt fights the resistance. Safe check: unplugged, rotate the drum slowly and feel for a catch, wobble, or grinding point. Rollers wear as a set, so replacing all of them at once is the usual approach and prevents a quick repeat failure.
If the dryer only hums and the drum will not start - even after you have ruled out a jam - the motor may be failing. Many motors have a thermal cutout that shuts them down when overworked by a seized pulley or roller, so a humming motor is not always dead. This is not a DIY diagnosis: testing or replacing a motor involves mains electrical components and should be handled by a qualified technician.
Sometimes a coin, screw, button, or piece of clothing slips past the drum seal and wedges between the drum and the bulkhead, stopping it from turning. Safe check: with the dryer unplugged, shine a light around the front and rear edges of the drum and gently feel for anything caught. Clearing a simple obstruction is homeowner-safe, but if the drum still will not move freely after, stop and have it inspected.
Call a technician whenever the repair means opening the dryer cabinet, which covers nearly every belt, idler pulley, roller, or motor job. If you smell burning rubber, hear squealing or grinding, or the motor only hums without turning the drum, stop using the dryer and have it looked at - running it can worsen the damage or create a fire risk. Anything involving the motor or wiring is mains-electrical work and is not a safe DIY task. A homeowner can safely unplug the unit, spin the drum to feel for drag, and clear a visible obstruction, but if the drum still won't turn freely, it's time for a pro. Our Tacoma and South King County technicians can diagnose the exact failed part and usually replace the belt, pulley, and rollers in one visit.

FAQ
Most drive-system repairs fall in the $150 to $450 range, depending on which parts failed and your model. We work on a flat-rate basis, so you get the price before any work starts. Our diagnostic visit is $79, and that fee is credited toward the repair when you have us do the work.
If the dryer is under about 8 years old and the cabinet and drum are sound, a belt, pulley, or roller repair is usually well worth it and far cheaper than a new machine. If the motor has failed on an older unit and the cost approaches the price of a replacement, it can make more sense to replace. A technician can tell you which side of that line you're on before you commit.
That smell usually means the drive belt is slipping or rubbing against a seized idler pulley or a stuck drum roller, generating friction and heat. It often shows up right before a belt breaks. Stop using the dryer until it's inspected, since the heat from a dragging belt is a safety concern.
We don't recommend it for most homeowners. The job requires opening the cabinet, routing the belt correctly around the motor pulley and idler, and inspecting the rollers at the same time - and it's easy to damage other parts or reassemble it wrong. A technician can do it safely and check the whole drive system in one visit.
