Dryer Won't Start When You Press the Button? Causes & Fixes

When you press start and your dryer just sits there - no hum, no spin, sometimes not even lights - the cause is usually power, a safety switch, or a blown fuse rather than the motor itself. The good news is that several of the most common reasons are safe to check in a few minutes, and a few are simple resets. Below are the most likely causes from most to least common, the checks you can safely do yourself in your Tacoma-area home, and when it is time to call a repair technician.

Quick answer
  • Confirm power first - reset the 240V double breaker fully off, then on, since one half can trip silently.
  • A door that does not click shut keeps the dryer from starting; the door switch is a very common cause.
  • Many models will not start if a Control Lock or child lock is on - check the control panel.
  • No hum and no response often points to a blown thermal fuse caused by a clogged vent.
  • Thermal fuse, start switch and control board faults need a multimeter and safe disassembly - best left to a technician.

Why it's worth fixing quickly

A dryer that will not start is more than a laundry backup. The single most common reason a thermal fuse blows is a clogged or restricted vent, and that same trapped lint and heat make a dryer one of the leading causes of home appliance fires - so a no-start can be your machine's safety system doing its job. Simply replacing a blown fuse without clearing the vent usually means the new fuse blows again and the underlying fire risk stays. Catching the real cause early keeps a cheap part from turning into a repeat repair, and keeps your home safer.

1No power or a tripped breaker

An electric dryer runs on a 240V double breaker, and one half can trip while the other stays on - leaving lights working but the dryer dead. Flip the breaker fully off, then firmly back on. Also confirm the cord is seated in the outlet and the machine is plugged in, not just the outlet switched on.

2Door not latched or a bad door switch

Most dryers will not start unless the door switch confirms the door is shut. Press the door firmly until it clicks and try again. If you do not hear or feel a click, or the door feels loose, the door switch or strike may have failed and needs replacing - a common, inexpensive part.

3Control Lock or child lock is on

Many newer dryers have a Control Lock or child-lock feature that disables the start button, often shown by a small lock icon on the panel. Check your control panel for a lock light, then press and hold the labeled button (often Control Lock, or a key icon) for about three seconds to clear it before assuming a deeper fault.

4Blown thermal fuse

This one-time safety fuse blows when the dryer overheats, usually because of a clogged vent, and on many models it cuts power to the start circuit so the dryer will not begin at all. It cannot be reset - it must be replaced and the airflow problem fixed, or the new fuse will blow again. Confirming and replacing it needs a multimeter and disassembly, so this is a job for a technician.

5Faulty start switch or push-to-start button

If you have power, the door clicks shut and no lock is on, the start switch itself may be worn out. A telltale sign is pressing start and hearing nothing at all - no hum, no click. Testing and replacing the switch involves opening the control panel and using a meter, which is best left to a pro.

6Failed control board or broken belt switch

On electronic models a failed main control board can leave the dryer unresponsive even when everything else checks out. Some dryers also have a belt-break switch that cuts power if the belt snaps. Both require diagnosis with a meter and safe disassembly - a technician can confirm which part is at fault.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Clean the lint filter every load. It takes seconds and is the single best way to protect airflow. Good airflow is what keeps the dryer from overheating and blowing the thermal fuse that causes many no-start faults.
  • Have the vent cleaned once a year. Lint builds up along the duct where you cannot see it, and a clogged vent is the usual reason a thermal fuse blows. An annual clean keeps the dryer starting reliably and removes the leading cause of dryer fires.
  • Close the door gently and keep the panel dry. Slamming the door wears out the door switch and strike over time, and spills on the control panel can damage buttons. Treating both kindly helps the start circuit last.

When to call a professional

If you have reset the 240V breaker, confirmed the door clicks shut and ruled out Control Lock but the dryer still will not start, the fault is most likely the door switch, a blown thermal fuse, the start switch or the control board - all of which need a multimeter and safe disassembly to diagnose. Because a blown thermal fuse almost always points to a restricted vent, it is worth having the airflow checked at the same time rather than just swapping the part. Our experienced Tacoma-area techs carry common dryer parts, so most no-start repairs are diagnosed and finished in a single visit. When in doubt, a quick professional diagnosis is the safest way to avoid a repeat failure or a fire risk.

FAQ

Dryer repair - frequently asked questions

Lights can work while the dryer will not start. The usual reasons are the door not clicking fully shut, a Control Lock being on, or a blown thermal fuse that cuts the start circuit. Check the door and the lock button first, then have the fuse tested if it still will not go.

Look for a small lock icon or a button labeled Control Lock or a key symbol on the panel. On most models you press and hold that button for about three seconds until the lock light goes off. If your model differs, the control panel or the owner's manual will name the exact button.

Usually worth repairing. Many no-start causes are inexpensive parts like a door switch or thermal fuse. As a rule of thumb, repair makes sense when it costs less than about half the price of a comparable new dryer, which most start-circuit fixes easily do.

Most dryer repairs land between $150 and $450, with a door switch or thermal fuse at the lower end and a control board higher. You approve a flat-rate price before we start, and the $79 diagnostic is credited toward the repair when you proceed.
