How to Clean a Clogged Dryer Vent: A Tacoma Homeowner's Guide

A clogged dryer vent is one of the most common and most overlooked problems we see in Tacoma and South King County homes. Lint slips past the screen, builds up inside the vent line, and slowly chokes off the airflow your dryer needs to work safely. The good news is that a short, accessible vent run is something many homeowners can clean themselves with the right approach and a few simple tools.

Quick answer
  • A clogged dryer vent makes clothes take two or three cycles to dry and is a leading cause of dryer fires.
  • Most homeowners can safely clean a short, straight vent run with an unplugged dryer and a basic vent brush kit.
  • Clean the lint screen every load and have the full vent line cleared once a year, more often with heavy use or pets.
  • Long roof vents, gas dryers, and lines you cannot reach are jobs for a professional.
  • If drying time keeps creeping up after a cleaning, the duct or blower may have a deeper problem worth a diagnosis.

Why this maintenance matters

A blocked vent traps heat and moisture inside the dryer, which is why clothes come out damp and the cycle runs again and again. That wasted heat drives up your power bill and makes the machine run hotter than it should, wearing out the heating element, thermal fuse, and motor years early. Most importantly, lint is highly flammable, and a packed vent is a recognized fire hazard, which is why clearing it is real safety maintenance and not just a chore. In our damp coastal climate, trapped moisture can also lead to mildew smells and rust inside the duct.

1Confirm the vent is actually clogged

Look for the warning signs first: clothes that are still damp after a full cycle, a dryer top that feels very hot to the touch, a burning or musty smell, or a long drying time that keeps getting worse. Step outside while the dryer runs and feel the exterior vent hood. Strong, warm airflow is good; weak or no airflow points to a clog in the line.

2Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall

Safety comes first. Unplug an electric dryer from the wall outlet before you touch anything. If you have a gas dryer, do not disconnect it yourself; the gas line and connections should be handled by a professional. Gently slide the dryer forward so you have room to reach the duct behind it, taking care not to crush the flexible hose.

3Disconnect the vent duct from the dryer

Loosen the clamp or foil tape holding the duct to the exhaust port on the back of the dryer. Pull the duct free and set it aside. Clear out any lint you can see and reach by hand at the dryer port and the start of the duct. This is usually where the heaviest buildup hides.

4Run a vent brush through the duct

Use a dryer vent cleaning kit, which is a flexible brush on rods that often attaches to a drill. Feed the brush into the duct and work it back and forth in sections, pulling out clumps of lint as you go. Work from both the dryer side and the exterior vent hood if you can reach it. Go slowly so you do not poke a hole in flexible or foil ducting.

5Clean the exterior vent hood and flap

Go outside to where the vent exits your house. Remove any cover or screen, pull out trapped lint, leaves, and debris, and make sure the louvered flap opens and closes freely. A stuck or blocked exterior flap is a common hidden cause of poor airflow and is a frequent nesting spot for birds and rodents.

6Vacuum, reconnect, and test

Use a vacuum with a hose attachment to pull out loosened lint from the duct, the floor, and behind the dryer. Reconnect the duct firmly to the dryer port and secure it with a clamp or fresh foil tape; never use screws that poke into the duct and snag lint. Push the dryer back, plug it in, and run a short cycle while you check for strong airflow at the exterior vent.

Keep it working between deep cleans

  • Clean the lint screen every single load. The lint screen is your first line of defense. Pull it out and clear the lint before or after each load so less of it ever reaches the vent line. A few times a year, wash the screen with a little soap and water to remove the invisible film that dryer sheets and fabric softener leave behind, since that film restricts airflow too.
  • Watch your drying time as an early warning. Pay attention to how long a normal load takes to dry. When loads start needing a little longer than usual, that is often the first sign lint is building up again. Catching it early means a quick cleaning instead of a packed, stubborn clog and a hard-working machine.
  • Keep the path short, smooth, and unblocked. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting rather than the white plastic or vinyl hose, which sags and traps lint. Keep the run as short and straight as possible, avoid crushing the duct against the wall, and check the exterior vent hood now and then for nests or debris, especially after windy or stormy weather here on the coast.

When to call a professional

Call a professional if you have a gas dryer, since the gas line should never be disconnected by a homeowner, or if your vent runs a long distance, travels up through the roof, or has bends and sections you cannot safely reach. It is also worth a service call if drying time stays slow after you have cleaned everything you can get to, if you notice scorching smells or the dryer shuts off mid-cycle, or if you simply are not comfortable pulling the machine out and working behind it. In those cases a deeper clog, a crushed duct, a failing thermal fuse, or a worn blower may be the real issue, and a technician has the rods, vacuums, and meters to clear the full line and confirm the dryer is running safely. We serve Tacoma and South King County, and a proper diagnosis takes the guesswork out of whether you need a cleaning, a duct repair, or a part replaced.

FAQ

Dryer repair - frequently asked questions

For most households, once a year is a good rule. Clean it more often, roughly every six months, if you do a lot of laundry, have a large family, dry pet bedding, or have a long vent run. The lint screen should be cleared every load no matter what.

Fixera works on a flat-rate model with a $79 diagnostic fee that is credited toward the repair when you proceed. Most dryer vent and related repairs fall in the general $150 to $450 range depending on the length of the run, accessibility, and whether any parts are needed. See our cost guide for more detail.

Yes. Lint is very flammable, and a blocked vent traps heat while feeding that lint with hot air, which is a well-known fire risk. Regular cleaning is one of the simplest and most important things you can do to keep your dryer safe.

Start with a vent cleaning, since a clog mimics a failing dryer and the fix is inexpensive. If the vent is clear and the machine is under about eight years old, a repair like a thermal fuse, element, or blower usually makes sense. For older dryers with major failures, a technician can give you an honest repair-versus-replace recommendation during the diagnosis.
