Dryer Takes 2 or 3 Cycles to Dry? It's Almost Always Airflow

When a dryer still gets warm but you have to run a load two or three times to get it dry, the heat is usually fine - the air just isn't moving. A dryer dries clothes by pushing heated air through the drum and carrying the moisture out the vent, so anything that chokes that airflow leaves your laundry warm and damp at the end of the cycle. The good news is that most of the common causes are things you can safely check yourself in the Tacoma damp before you ever pick up the phone.

Quick answer
  • A dryer that heats but takes multiple cycles is an airflow problem far more often than a heating problem.
  • Start with the lint screen and the long vent duct to the outside, not the heating element.
  • A vent hood flap that won't open or barely puffs air is a strong sign of a clogged duct.
  • Restricted airflow makes the dryer run hot, which wears parts and is a real fire risk over time.
  • If the duct run is long, buried in a wall, or you smell a hot or burning odor, call a technician.

Why it's worth fixing quickly

A dryer fighting bad airflow is not just slow, it is running hotter and longer than it was designed to. That trapped heat stresses the heating element, the thermostats, and the drum bearings, so a cheap airflow fix ignored today often turns into a bigger repair later. More seriously, lint is highly flammable, and a clogged vent is one of the leading causes of dryer fires. You are also paying for two or three times the electricity or gas on every load. Fixing airflow protects your home, your appliance, and your utility bill all at once.

1Clogged or coated lint screen

This is the most common cause and the easiest to check. Pull the lint screen, clear the visible lint, then hold it under running water - if water pools on top instead of flowing through, a film from dryer sheets and fabric softener is choking the airflow. Scrub it with a soft brush and a little dish soap, rinse, dry it fully, and reinstall. Clean the screen before every load going forward.

2Blocked or kinked vent duct to the outside

If the screen is clean and clothes still come out damp, the long duct that carries air outdoors is the next suspect. Lint builds up over months and packs tight at bends, and flimsy foil duct can crush behind the dryer. With the dryer off and unplugged, pull it out gently, disconnect the duct, and check for packed lint or kinks. A short, smooth run you can reach is safe to vacuum out; a long run buried in a wall or roofline is a job for a pro.

3Vent hood flap stuck or covered outside

Go outside while the dryer runs and find the exterior vent hood. The flap should open and you should feel strong, warm air pushing out. If the flap barely moves, the air feels weak, or you find lint, a bird nest, or debris packed behind it, that blockage is backing up your whole system. Clear what you can safely reach. In our wetter months, leaves and pests clogging that hood are very common around Tacoma and Puyallup.

4Overloaded drum or wrong cycle setting

A drum packed too full can't tumble clothes through the airflow, so the load dries unevenly and needs another run. Try a smaller load and confirm you are on a heated cycle, not Air Fluff or Air Dry, which blow unheated air on purpose. Also check that an auto-dry moisture sensor isn't being fooled - bunched-up sheets or one heavy item can trick it into stopping early. These are free things to rule out before any repair.

5Long, undersized, or sagging duct run

Some homes simply have too much duct - a long path with many elbows, a crushed section inside a wall, or a sagging flexible run where lint and moisture settle. Even when clean, an undersized or overly long route can't move enough air. Diagnosing and re-routing or replacing ducting inside walls or ceilings is not a safe DIY job. A technician can measure the airflow and recommend a proper, code-compliant vent path.

6Weak blower wheel or failing moisture sensor

Less often, the problem is inside the machine. A blower wheel clogged with lint or loose on its shaft moves less air, and a dirty or failing moisture sensor can end the cycle while clothes are still wet. These checks involve opening the cabinet and working near electrical and, on gas models, the gas valve, so they are best left to a technician rather than a homeowner.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Clean the lint screen every load. Make it a habit to clear the lint screen before or after every single load, and deep-clean it with soap and water every month or so to strip off the invisible softener film. This one habit prevents the majority of slow-drying calls we see.
  • Have the vent line cleaned yearly. Have the full vent duct from the dryer to the outside hood cleaned about once a year, or more often with a big family or a long duct run. Switch any flimsy foil or vinyl duct to smooth rigid or semi-rigid metal, which traps far less lint and resists crushing.
  • Keep the exterior hood clear and give room behind. Check the outside vent hood each season for lint, leaves, and nests, especially after our wet Pacific Northwest stretches. Leave a few inches between the dryer and the wall so the duct isn't crushed, and avoid jamming the machine tight against a corner.

When to call a professional

Call a technician when you have cleaned the lint screen, checked the duct you can reach, and confirmed the exterior hood is clear but loads still take more than one cycle. You should also call if the vent run is long, buried inside a wall, ceiling, or roofline, or if you can't safely move the dryer to inspect it. Any hot, burning, or melting-plastic smell means you should stop using the dryer and call right away. The same goes for any gas dryer concern, since gas and the internal valve are never a homeowner job. A pro can measure actual airflow, clear ducting you can't reach, and confirm the heating and sensor parts are healthy.

FAQ

Dryer repair - frequently asked questions

Heat and airflow are two separate things. If the dryer warms up but clothes stay damp, the element is usually working and the trapped, moist air just isn't being carried out - almost always a clogged lint screen or a blocked vent duct rather than a heating fault.

It is not a good idea. Restricted airflow makes the dryer run much hotter than intended, which wears out parts faster and raises the risk of a lint fire. It is fine to run a final load while you arrange a fix, but don't ignore it long-term, and never run it if you smell anything burning.

Many airflow issues are inexpensive, and a full vent cleaning or duct repair generally falls in the $150 to $450 range depending on the duct length and what's involved. We charge a flat $79 diagnostic fee that is credited toward the repair when you move forward. See our cost guide for more detail.

Slow drying alone is rarely a reason to replace a dryer, since it's usually an airflow or vent problem rather than a worn-out machine. Repair almost always makes sense here. Replacement only becomes worth weighing if the dryer is quite old and you're also facing a failed heating element, motor, or drum at the same time.
