Dryer Not Heating or Not Drying? Causes & Fixes

If your dryer runs but clothes come out damp - or it won't heat at all - the cause is almost always airflow or a failed heating component. Below are the most common reasons a dryer stops drying, the checks you can safely do yourself, and when it's time to call a repair technician.

Quick answer
  • Clean the lint filter and vent - restricted airflow is the #1 cause of poor drying.
  • Electric dryers use a double breaker; if the drum spins but there's no heat, one half may have tripped.
  • No heat with the drum still turning usually means the heating element, thermal fuse or thermostat.
  • Heat-component faults need a multimeter and safe disassembly - best left to a technician.

Why it's worth fixing quickly

A dryer that won't heat isn't only inconvenient. When poor drying is caused by a blocked vent, trapped lint and heat become a genuine fire hazard - failed dryers are one of the leading causes of home appliance fires. Restricted airflow also forces the dryer to run far longer, driving up your energy bill and wearing out the heating element and motor. Catching the cause early keeps a cheap fix from turning into an expensive one.

1Clogged lint filter

Clean the lint screen every load. Once a month, wash it in warm soapy water to remove fabric-softener film that quietly blocks airflow even when the screen looks clean.

2Restricted or clogged vent

Check the vent hose for kinks and the outside flap for lint. A blocked vent traps heat and moisture - and is a real fire risk. Clean it (or schedule a professional vent cleaning) at least once a year.

3Tripped breaker or no gas

An electric dryer needs both halves of its 240V double breaker. If the drum spins but there's no heat, flip the breaker fully off, then on. On a gas dryer, confirm the gas supply valve is open.

4Failed heating element (electric)

A burned-out element leaves you with a running dryer and no heat. Confirming it needs a multimeter and partial disassembly, so this is a job for a technician.

5Blown thermal fuse

This safety fuse blows when the dryer overheats - usually because of a clogged vent. It must be replaced and the airflow problem fixed, or the new fuse will blow again too.

6Faulty igniter or valve (gas dryers)

If a gas dryer turns but won't heat, the igniter or gas-valve coils may have failed. These are gas components - leave them to a qualified pro.

7Overloaded drum

Keep the drum no more than three-quarters full so hot air can circulate. Split large loads - overloading also strains the motor and belt.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Clean the lint filter every load. It takes seconds and is the single best thing you can do for airflow, drying time and fire safety.
  • Have the vent cleaned once a year. Lint builds up along the duct where you can't see it. An annual clean keeps drying fast and removes the leading cause of dryer fires.
  • Don't overload the drum. Leave room for hot air to move. Smaller loads dry faster and put less strain on the belt, motor and heating element.

When to call a professional

If you've cleaned the lint filter and vent and the dryer still won't heat, the fault is most likely the heating element, thermal fuse, thermostat or (on gas models) the igniter - all of which need a multimeter and safe disassembly. Our experienced techs carry common dryer parts, so most repairs are finished in a single visit.

FAQ

Dryer repair - frequently asked questions

Restricted airflow. Clean the lint trap and vent - trapped moisture keeps clothes damp even when the heating element is working fine.

Usually reduced airflow (lint or vent buildup) or a weakening heating element. Clean the vent first; if it persists, have the element and thermostat tested.

If it's a gas dryer or you smell burning, stop and call a pro. Airflow issues are safe to troubleshoot, but a blown thermal fuse points to overheating that should be properly fixed.

Most dryer repairs land between $150 and $400 - a thermal fuse or heating element sits at the lower end, a motor higher. You approve a flat-rate price before we start, and the $79 diagnostic is credited toward the repair.
