Repair Guide
A dishwasher that lights up but never starts, or hums to life but never fills with water, is one of the more frustrating calls we get around Tacoma and South King County, mostly because the cause is often something simple that hides in plain sight. Before you assume the worst, there are several safe checks any homeowner can run in a few minutes, from making sure the door is fully latched to ruling out a control lock or a delay-start timer. This guide walks through the likely causes from most to least common, the checks you can do yourself, and the point where it is smarter to bring in a technician.
A dishwasher stuck on no-start matters more than the daily inconvenience suggests. Left unaddressed, a worn door latch or switch tends to fail completely, and a failing inlet valve can begin to leak under the cabinet, which in our damp climate quickly leads to swollen flooring and mold. A breaker that keeps tripping on the dishwasher circuit is also a warning sign you should not keep resetting. Catching the real cause early keeps a simple fix from growing into water damage or a larger repair.
This is by far the most common reason a dishwasher refuses to start. For safety, the machine will not run until the door latch is fully engaged, and a latch that only half-clicks leaves it sitting dead. Press the door firmly closed until you hear and feel it click into place, and check that a tall pot, a tilted upper rack, or a utensil sticking out is not holding it open by a fraction. If the latch feels loose or never clicks, or the door looks closed but the machine still will not start, the latch assembly or the door switch that confirms it may be worn. Those parts sit behind the door panel near mains wiring, so replacing them is a job for a technician.
Most dishwashers have a control lock or child lock that disables the buttons so a curious child or a wipe of the counter cannot start a cycle. When it is on, the panel may light up but nothing responds, which looks exactly like a broken machine. Look for a lock symbol or a button labeled Lock, Control Lock, or sometimes a key icon. On many models you press and hold that button, or a specific button, for about three seconds to toggle it off. Your owner's manual lists the exact combination for your model.
If you or someone in the house tapped a delay-start button, the dishwasher is simply waiting and will not begin for several hours. The panel often shows a small clock or a number of hours rather than a normal countdown. Press Cancel or hold the delay button to clear it, then start the cycle fresh. It is worth ruling this out early, since it is a very common false alarm that costs nothing to fix.
A dishwasher with a completely dark panel may not be getting power. Check your home's electrical panel for a tripped breaker on the kitchen or dishwasher circuit, and flip it fully off, then back on. Many dishwashers are also hardwired or plugged in under the sink, and a wall switch near the counter sometimes controls that circuit, so make sure it is on. If the breaker trips again right away, stop and call a professional, because a repeat trip points to an electrical fault that should not be reset over and over.
If the dishwasher starts but never fills, the water supply is the first thing to check. There is usually a shutoff valve under the kitchen sink, often on the hot-water line, that feeds the dishwasher. Make sure it is turned fully counterclockwise to open. If the valve was closed for a recent plumbing job and only partly reopened, the machine may fill too slowly to run. A kinked or crushed fill line behind or under the unit can do the same thing.
Dishwashers run on a control board that can occasionally freeze on a stuck or paused cycle, leaving the machine unresponsive. A simple power reset clears many of these. Turn it off at the breaker or unplug it under the sink, wait about a minute, then restore power and try a fresh cycle. If it keeps stalling at the same point or flashes an error code, write the code down and look it up, since it points to a specific fault a technician can target.
If power and the supply valve are good but the dishwasher still will not fill, the water inlet valve may have failed or the float switch in the tub may be stuck. The float is a small dome on the tub floor that tells the machine the water level, and if it sticks up the dishwasher thinks it is already full and will not add water. You can gently check that the float moves freely, but the inlet valve and the control board carry mains power and connect to the water line, so testing or replacing them is a job for a technician.
If you have confirmed the door latches fully, ruled out a control lock and delay-start, checked the breaker and the water shutoff, and run a power reset but the dishwasher still will not start or fill, it is time to call a technician. You should also call right away if the breaker trips again the moment you reset it, if you see water leaking under the cabinet, or if the panel throws an error code you cannot clear. Anything involving the door switch, water inlet valve, float assembly, or control board means working near mains electrical components and the water line, which is not a safe DIY job. A Fixera technician serving Tacoma and South King County can pinpoint the exact cause quickly and tell you honestly whether it is worth repairing.

FAQ
The most common reasons are a door that is not fully latched, an active control lock or child lock, or a delay-start timer that was set by accident. Press the door firmly until it clicks, look for a lock symbol on the panel and hold that button to clear it, and cancel any delay start. If the panel lights up but Start does nothing after those checks, the door switch or control board may need a technician.
If the machine runs but no water comes in, start with the supply. Check that the shutoff valve under the kitchen sink is fully open and that the fill line behind the unit is not kinked. If the supply is good, the water inlet valve may have failed or the float switch in the tub may be stuck, both of which are technician repairs because they involve mains power and the water line.
It depends on the cause, from a worn door latch or switch to a failed inlet valve or control board. Most dishwasher repairs in our area fall in the $150 to $450 range. Fixera charges a flat $79 diagnostic fee that is credited toward the repair when you go ahead with us, so you know the real cause before paying for parts. See our cost guide for more detail.
If the machine is under about eight to ten years old and the fix is a latch, door switch, or inlet valve, repair is usually the better value. If it is older and the failure is the control board on top of other worn parts, replacement may make more sense. A quick diagnosis tells you the exact part and cost so you can decide with real numbers instead of guessing.
